The aim of the project is to design and construct a community center building with a new and growing community called Chamazi in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The community center building will function as a pilot project and learning platform for new affordable building techniques. One of these is the bottle wall technique, where re-used water bottles are filled with sand and stacked like bricks for a load bearing wall structure.
The experience that the community gains from this particular construction project could later be implemented to other construction, such as housing. A community centre will also have a positive social impact on this developing community by providing a place where the members can get together, coordinate themselves, thrive and grow sustainably.
The project is carried out in collaboration with a tanzanian NGO called Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI), a finnish NGO called Ukumbi and Aalto University. The main beneficiaries are the community members in Chamazi. The project group is currently in the process of collecting funding for the project.
